September Square Along
Here are our first 2 squares! September is the time to celebrate the equinox and harvest and these squares reflect this.

Mitre square, September Square 1a
The Autumn equinox occurs around the 23rd September this year (2026) so the theme for this month’s square or at least one of them is the Equinox. The word equinox comes from the Latin aequinoctium meaning ‘equal night’ at this point day and night are roughly equal in length and from now on the nights will start to get longer. Tori thought a great knitting technique to embody this would be the mitre square so here we are! There are 2 versions of this square and you can make one or both.
Materials
Approx 20g of DK yarn for single coloured square, 15g DK of each colour for 2 coloured square.
4mm Knitting needles
Stitch marker for single coloured square
Abbreviations
K- Knit
P – Purl
sts – Stitches
WS – Wrong Side
RS - Right Side
PM – Place Marker
SM – Slip Marker
K2tog – Knit 2 stitches together
SSK – Slip Slip Knit
CDD – Central Double Decrease, Slip 2 stitches from the left to the right needle as if you are going to slip 2 stitches together, knit one stitch and then pass the 2 slipped stitches over this knitted stitch.
Both squares should measure 15cm when blocked.
Square A (single coloured version)
Cast on 60sts
Row 1 (WS) k to end placing a marker in the middle of the row.
Row 2 K to 2 stitches before the marker, K2tog, SM, SSK, K to end of row. (58sts)
Row 3 Knit row slipping the marker as you come to it.
Repeat rows 2 and 3 until you have 2 stitches remaining finishing on a row 2. Remove the marker and thread the yarn through the 2 stitches to secure.
Your first Mitre Square is Complete!
Square B (single colour version)
Cast on 61 Sts Row 1 (WS) K30, P1, K30
Row 2 (RS) K29, CDD, K29
Row 3 K29, P1, K29
Row 4 K28, CDD, K28
Repeat rows 3 and 4 decreasing one stitch before the CDD on each row 3 and remembering to Purl the centre stitch on the wrong side. When you have one stitch remaining cut the yarn and thread through stitch to secure.
Two colour square for both Square A and B
• Work exactly as given for desired square casting on in colour A
• On row 2 introduce colour B
• On row 4 change back to colour A, holding the old colour along the project and bring new yarn over to securely carry it up the edge.
• Keep following the pattern changing the colour as before on every right sided row
Blackberry Square September Square 1b
September always reminds us of walking around our village looking for the tell tale sign of ripening nuts and berries. We always looked forward to blackberry picking and usually eating half of our harvest before getting home!
September’s stitch of the month was Blackberry Stitch and so it has become one of our 2 squares this month.
Materials
Approx 20g of DK yarn.
4mm Knitting needles
Abbreviations
K- Knit
P – Purl
sts – Stitches
WS – Wrong Side
RS - Right Side
P3tog – Purl 3 stitches together
Tension
Square should measure approx 15cm, some blocking may be needed
Cast on 37 stitches (or a multiple of 4 plus 1 to allow for side stitches)
Row 1 (RS) P to end
Row 2 K1, *P3tog, (k1,p1,k1) all in the same stitch. Repeat from * to last four stitches, p3tog, K1
Row 3 P to end.
Row 4 K1, *(k1,p1,k1) all in the same stitch, p3tog. Repeat from * to the last two stitches. (K1, p1, k1), K1
Repeat these 4 rows 11 times in total or until square measures approx 15cm ending
after a row 2 or 4. Cast off in purl.
Top Tips! If you lose track of your rows remember if the bobbles are facing you then it is either a row 1 or 3. If you are not sure if you are on a row 2 or 4 look at the last bobble row. If it ends with a bobble (when the right side is facing) then you need to do a row 4. If it doesn't then it will be row 2.
Place markers at each end to remind you of the side stitch.
